Some common causes of constipation
Several things can promote the onset of constipation:
👉 Lack of physical activity. A sedentary lifestyle is a factor in slowing down intestinal transit.
👉 Insufficient hydration: rarely drink water and regularly eat bread and beans.
👉 Consumption of iced foods: (iced tea, iced porridge, iced water, formed yoghurt, gari + ice, iced beer, iced sweets, etc.) Anything that cools the digestive tract also slows down intestinal transit and promotes an accumulation of abdominal fat.
👉 An unbalanced diet: a diet low in vegetables and fruits for example.
👉 The habit of putting off the need to go to the toilet.
👉 The modern sitting position on the toilet further aggravates constipation.
👉 Psychological problems or significant stress. Stress slows down transit considerably.
👉 Neurological origin: Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord injuries
👉 In women, hormonal changes during menstrual cycles, pregnancy or menopause can influence intestinal transit.
👉 Sometimes, constipation can alternate with diarrhoea. This alternation indicates an obstacle in the intestines (for example, an accumulation of hard stools) or chronic inflammation.
👉 A period of constipation could also be triggered by certain conditions such as:
- Rectal or colon cancer
- Diabetes
- Hypothyroidism
- Chronic renal failure
- Intestinal obstruction
- A tumour or benign growth
- Irritable bowel syndrome
NB: If you suffer from constipation, undergo rigorous treatment as soon as possible to avoid it.
